EGR is an essential component of the vehicles. When an engine runs and burns the gasoline fuel, Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) is released through the exhaust into the air. Nitrogen Oxide is a very dangerous gas; it can cause acid rain. Because NOx has extremely bad effects on human health and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has taken some serious measures. Their job is to help keep the environment and its air clean or help get it cleaned by the conscientious emission control service and to prevent polluted air.
To fulfill this, they keep a strict check on the Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR) system service. Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) is one of the primary contributors to air pollution. As we know, there are many other factors too.
It is very important to know the purpose of EGR, and everyone should be aware of its basic operation. Nowadays people feel it unnecessary to keep EGR and most of them plan to delete it. With the better knowledge of EGR delete system, people would be able to take the right decision.
Basic EGR system working operation:
The dangerous gas Nitrogen Oxide forms when the pressures become high and the temperatures shoots up in the combustion chamber. To control this state EGR system are present in the vehicles. We can control the formation of NOx by either reducing the compression or the high temperature in the combustion chamber. Emission control engineers have developed the EGR system to control the high temperature.
What EGR does is? It introduces a controlled amount of inert gas into the chamber to partially quench the fire. To make it clearer considers the example of someone doing barbeque. When the barbeque flares instead of putting out the fire, he splashes it. This splashing doesn’t put out the fire, but it slows things down a bit. So is the case when EGR introduces some of the exhaust gas into the cylinder, the fire in the combustion chamber becomes less intense. EGR exhaust gas takes space that would otherwise contain air, resulting in higher flames. With EGR working, the fire is more like a fuming pile of leaves than a blast furnace. Exhaust gas was chosen by the emission engineers because it is free and plentiful. The use of EGR system reduces the formation of NOx up to 60 percent.
The EGR valve opens and system start working during light throttle and warm engine operation and routes the exhaust gases back into the engine’s inlet air. It doesn’t take big amounts. EGR occupies less than 10 percent of the total air/fuel mixture. This gas is a small element but this little amount of non-flammable stuff is enough to quench the flame.
